I have some pet peeves that seem to pop up more often than I would like. The first one is the people who say (and type) “www“. “www” in a URL is a relick from the last decade when people who had domains set up a sub-domain to serve their websites. These days most people have set their domains up that you don’t need to enter “www.” before it. If you can’t do it with a particular domain, it could be that the domain is not set up that way or that your ISP’s DNS servers aren’t set up that way. Another pet peeve is people who type and say “http://”. I don’t know about older web browsers but it is not necessary to say or type this. If the page that you are trying to access uses encryption, however, it may be necessary to type “https://”. These are actually silly because most people don’t know what www and http mean so that’s why they say them.
What I consider a serious problem is when I see an ad (online, print, TV or radio commercial) where they say “For more information, visit us online at blahblahblah.com.” You go to blahblahblah.com looking to hear more about this service/product/etc. and you get the message “blahblahblah.com is under construction. Come back soon.” Why the heck would I come back to this site? My interest is no longer piqued. It’s false advertising to say that more information is available when it’s not and to give the impression that you have website when you do not. How hard is it to get a website up with some basic information anyway? The more important problem is that those who are advertising probably think that it makes them look more legitimate to have their own domain name and use it in advertising but don’t realize that it actually makes them look less legit when you see the “under construction” message.
