“Creating Technology For Social Good” Theme for Women in Computing Conference

“Creating Technology For Social Good” is the focus for this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing taking place September 30 through October 3, 2009 in Tucson, Arizona. The theme recognizes the significant role women play in defining technology used to solve social issues. Megan Smith, Vice President, New Business Development, Google, and General Manager, Google.org and Fran Berman, Professor in the UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the first holder of the High Performance Computing Endowed Chair in the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD will be keynote speakers.

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, the world’s largest gathering of women in computing, is a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today’s technology fields, including computer science, information technology, research and engineering.

Past Grace Hopper Celebrations have resulted in collaborative proposals, networking, mentoring, and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing.

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is presented by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and the Association for Computing Machinery.
