Humanitarian Technology Challenge, a partnership between IEEE and the United Nations Foundation & Vodafone Foundation Technology Partnership, is designed to bring together technical professionals and humanitarians to develop technological solutions for pressing challenges facing humanity.

The HTC needs a broad range of participants because of foreseeable ground-breaking advances in, and applications of, humanitarian technologies that will best result from the combined efforts of many. They include humanitarians, technologists, students, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, corporations, and other product developers. The HTC is also seeking the support of foundations and other potential financial resources.

HTC held a conference on June 1 and 2 to discuss an initial set of challenges identified by focus groups composed of representatives from ten humanitarian organizations. These include:

Reliable Electricity – Availability of power for electronic devices

Data Connectivity of Rural District Health Offices — Capability of exchanging data among remote field offices and central health facilities.

Patient ID Tied to Health Records – Maintain consistent patient records, including when patients visit different clinics and when they relocate.

HTC believes that it “is the first time that a major humanitarian organization and a technology association have formed an up-front, collaborative relationship.” It’s not too late for you to get involved.
