At CES Intel touted a new platform that they call Ultrabook. I asked what was made them ultra since we already have notebooks and netbooks. I was told that Ultrabooks have the following features:

  • Extremely thin – 21 mm or less
  • Instant on capability.
  • Increased battery life due to solid state drives.

The Ultrabook display was huge. I was a little disappointed that they had such a small area to talk about security. I did learn there though that several features built into the Ultrabook are theft protection (remote tracking and deletion) as well as token based identity protection.

Super slim laptops with excellent battery life are certainly welcome.  They look a lot like MacBooks to me though.  What do you think?

grace hopper 2009“Creating Technology For Social Good” is the focus for this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing taking place September 30 through October 3, 2009 in Tucson, Arizona.  The theme recognizes the significant role women play in defining technology used to solve social issues.  Megan Smith, Vice President, New Business Development, Google, and General Manager, Google.org and Fran Berman, Professor in the UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the first holder of the High Performance Computing Endowed Chair in the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD will be keynote speakers.

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, the world’s largest gathering of women in computing, is a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today’s technology fields, including computer science, information technology, research and engineering.

Past Grace Hopper Celebrations have resulted in collaborative proposals, networking, mentoring, and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing.

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is presented by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and the Association for Computing Machinery.
